Jewish social justice group NeverAgainAus held a small but visible protest outside Federal Departrment of Immigration in Canberra last week.

In a post on his Facebook page, one of the organisers, Yaakov Aharon, wrote: "Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has sold off the human rights of these refugees so he can hold onto the extreme elements of his own party.

"This is personal to me. Jews are a refugee people. We have been expelled from 109 countries since the birth of Jesus Christ. Thanks to Natan SB for finding 600 shoes - I still don't understand where or how - one shoe for each of the refugees who we have abandoned.

"When the Nazis wished to do their Jews away, they asked Australia to take Jews to the gas chambers, they took our shoes and added them to a heap similar to what we have created.

"We won't stay silent."
