Think your wedding video has star potential? The Jewish Museum of Australia is calling on the community to contribute to the first update to its permanent exhibition since 1995.
For the first time in almost three decades, the Jewish Museum of Australia is refreshing its permanent exhibition – and the local community is being invited to contribute.
The new space will house a revitalised wedding display that features footage of real-life ceremonies from couples across the entire spectrum of Jewish life. It comes as part of large-scale renovations to the museum, which remains closed to the public until February 2024.
Anyone connected to Judaism in some way and who included Jewish elements in their special day are encouraged to take part, from those who had traditional religious affairs to unconventional celebrations and same sex, interfaith or mixed-race unions.
The exhibit is the brainchild of the Melbourne-based museum’s new curator Esther Gyorki and aims to spotlight love and celebration in Jewish tradition and culture, a particularly poignant message for a local community currently facing increasing tensions and rising antisemitism.
Up to two photos or one five-minute video of a wedding or union celebration with Jewish elements can be submitted and can include both amateur and professional footage of, for example, the couple under the chuppah, dancing in circles and on chairs, signing the Ketubah, breaking the glass and sipping wine.
The museum will have final say when it comes to the content featured in the exhibit and has warned it will not include all footage submitted.
Submissions can be made online and close on Friday 19 January 2024.
