The echo symbol is just the latest in a string of coded ways the far right has learned to communicate online. It is an ‘online equivalent of taunting someone verbally’, said US Anti-Defamation League chief, days after Google removed antisemitic Chrome extension. In a counter protest, Jews and non-Jews put the symbol around their own names on social media.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, was established by Jewish leaders to stop ‘the defamation of the Jewish people’ but also ‘to put an end forever to unfair and unjust discrimination against ... any sect or body of citizens.’
