His own favorite work, David Rubinger told interviewer Yossi Klein Halevi in 2007, depicted a blind boy who arrived as a new immigrant in Israel in the 1950s stroking a relief map of Israel. “I call it ‘Seeing the Homeland,’” Rubinger told Halevi.

Rubinger’s respect for his subjects opened doors to him that were closed to other photographers. The most remarkable example of this is his famous photo of Menachem Begin putting a shoe on his wife Aliza’s foot, on a plane.
