16 January 2016 was ‘implementation day’ for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 14 July 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany (the P5+1). A detailed assessment by the International Crisis Group concludes that it has been a success in its main objectives but remains in jeopardy unless both Washington and Tehran defend and extend the spirit as well as the letter of the accord.
