Obama’s 24-minute address was laden with empathy, understanding and solidarity for Israel and the Jewish people. ‘They were the words of a friend - a friend in the highest of places.’ He acknowledged the presence and gesture of Mahmoud Abbas in his speech (which Netanyahu did not) and, using Shimon Peres’s own words, challenged Israel’s leaders to end Jewish rule over the Palestinians.
