There were initial reservations about the West Bank ballet centre, with some commenting that it is better to teach girls how to pray in mosques, but opinions changed once Shyrine Ziadeh explained that dance is not just about movement of the body. Israel now has its first Palestinian male ballet dancer and there is a ballet class also in the Gaza Strip.

Most Palestinians expect the traditional folklore dance of dabke, but the women in the Sayeret Ramallah dance company are pushing the boundaries of their conservative society. ‘We are not just dancing pretty. What we do stems from the politics here.’
