A step back for Palestinian workers’ rights and for Israeli democracy – Stuart Appelbaum – Haaretz 23.08.16
A new Israeli regulation undermines Palestinians’ rights to sue Israeli employers, in Israel or the West Bank, over abusive and unlawful labour practices and further entrenches two unequal sets of laws for Israelis and Palestinians. The regulation has been designed by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and MK Shuli Moalem-Refaeli, both of the right wing, pro-settler Habayit Hayehudi party, to inhibit Palestinian employees of Israeli businesses from benefitting from Israel’s progressive labour laws. The Jewish Labor Committee, the voice of the labour movement in the US Jewish community, calls on the Knesset and Israel’s Supreme Court to defend workers’ rights to fair labour practices.
