B’Tselem head urges Security Council to act now on settlements - The Times of Israel 14.10.16
Hagai El-Ad (B’Tselem) showed two videos and cited ‘invisible, bureaucratic daily violence’ that dominates Palestinian life ‘from cradle to grave’, while ‘ever-present’ settlers live in a first-world community ‘that exists only for them.’ He added that Israel uses the peace process ‘to buy time’ to establish facts on the ground for the settlements and the country could not occupy a people for 50 years and call itself a democracy. Lara Friedman (Americans for Peace Now) criticised settlement expansion, a significant portion of which she called ‘illegal growth’, and said human rights groups are being targetted by reactionary groups in Israel and the Israeli government ‘because their work reveals facts that some prefer to hide - facts that challenge the official Israeli government narrative.’ She also criticised the human rights record of some Council members.
