Trump took credit on Twitter for the current crisis between the Sunni Arab world and Qatar, saying it followed his condemnation of funding terrorism during his Saudi visit. He failed to mention, however, that Qatar is home to one of the largest American airbases in the region, hosting some 11,000 US military personel, and serving as the US command and logistics hub for operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The move was announced by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Bahrain and Yemen. The Maldives and the eastern government in divided Libya also said they were joining in the sanctions. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in Sydney that the US stands ready to help defuse the tension.
