There is an obvious difference between opposing the Israeli government’s policies and opposing the state’s existence… The EU is cannier, fairer, and stronger than the BDS movement, though its sanctions may be misconstrued as calculated to add to the movement’s prestige. The real challenge to Israel’s economy, and sense of purpose, will not be BDS but successive Likud governments that expect educated Europeans to buy into the idea that ‘terror’ justifies what they’re doing.
